Does “What we do in the shadows” take place in 2011?
Sometimes funny things can happen when stock footage comes in. In FX’s (disappointing) latest episode What we do in the shadowsthere was a moment that made me wonder: What year is this show set in?
Spoilers for “Freddie”.
In the most recent episode of the vampire series, Nandor and Guillermo go on dates in New York with their “Freddie”. On this trip to New York, we see a bunch of images of Times Square, and one I liked. When you see the area near the Broadway steps, there are billboards for Nasty, The Phantom of the Operaand … Camelot on Starz.
It stuck with me because I’m one of five people who watched Camelot, because of my crush on Eva Green. It was a gritty reimagining of King Arthur mythology, unlike the more fun Merlin on the BBC. Oh yeah, and it aired and then canceled in 2011 after just one season.
At first I was confused by the billboard and thought that What we do in the shadows intentionally took place in the past and I somehow missed it, but my co-workers reassured me that the series is set in our modern day, not to mention Colin’s iPad and Roblox Robinson in Jersey Devil.
It was just a little gag that made me smile, mostly because Camelot was a show with no pop culture impact, just seeing the billboard was hilarious. Or maybe the show is set in an alternate timeline where this show was a hit and had a second season with the same billboard? Anyway, it was a fun little gag for those who know this area of New York. Although, next time, I hope we will have a Mama Mia! poster cameo.
