The Delta Record | “Once Upon a Dream” by Sonia exhibited at the MIB Gallery

BUCKHANNON – The Colonial Arts Center’s MIB Gallery is currently exhibiting works by Fierce Sonia. A multimedia artist from White Sulfur Springs, W.Va., Sonia’s artistry is feminine yet strong and has aspects of religion, fairy tales, superheroes, pop culture, mythology and advertising.

Sonia said The delta of records, “I am very proud of this work and so happy to share it with Buckhannon. It’s exciting for me, as an artist, to see the work all of a sudden. The vibrant colors come to life next to each other and the viewer has the opportunity to make comparisons, find similarities and places of repetition. The characters are often borrowed from fairy tales or superhero stories. These mixed media paintings recognize the powerful function of folk tales in helping to imagine a new future.

Sonia also submitted the following, which describes this particular exhibit, “Once Upon a Dream”. “I have long been interested in the power of history. I borrow characters and elements from our most universal shared stories. The kind we tell and tell our kids maybe at bedtime. Once upon a time, once upon a time a dream… Superheroes, mythologies, fairy tales, and even pop culture reinforce our values, celebrate our heroes, and can be a cautionary tale. Folk stories are meant to be told, in the narrative fascinating adaptations occur and patterns occur; it is the same as painting in series. I want to have my place in the rich tradition and contribute by expanding the roles that women play, by making them central heroines in their own narratives”, explained the artist.

The solo exhibition remains on display and can be viewed by visiting the MIB Gallery located at the Colonial Arts Center from 4-8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through July 16. Sonia also has a Facebook page where you can follow the artist. Moreover, you can also follow the ART26201 page on Facebook to get information about Sonia’s exhibition and information about upcoming exhibitions and more.
